TURNOVER MATHS · AUSTRALIA 2026

How to Calculate Bonus Turnover

Turn a wagering clause into a dollar figure and a round count, then test it against your budget before a deposit locks the bonus in.

Produce one dollar number for a bonus and judge the offer on that number alone. The right approach is to verify the live account information first, then compare the practical rules that affect deposits, play and withdrawals.

Turnover is a stake total, not a loss total

The word turnover describes how much money passes through the account as stakes. It does not describe how much of it disappears. A single dollar can be staked, won back and staked again, and each pass counts.

That distinction matters because a large turnover figure reads as frightening until you see it as volume. A requirement of several thousand dollars can be met from a much smaller balance, provided the game and the budget survive the process.

What the figure really measures is exposure time. More required turnover means more rounds played, and more rounds played means the house edge has more opportunities to apply. The requirement is a cost in expected value, not a debt.

The calculation needs three inputs

Every turnover sum is built from the same three numbers, and each one has to be read from the terms rather than assumed. Get them onto one page before doing any arithmetic.

Keep the deposit and the bonus on separate lines throughout. Collapsing them early is how the base gets misread, and the base is the input with the largest effect on the answer.

Turn the dollar figure into rounds

A turnover total on its own is hard to judge. Divide it by the maximum bonus bet and the answer becomes a count of rounds, which is something a player can picture against an evening or a week.

Round counts also expose impossible offers quickly. If the arithmetic asks for more rounds than the expiry window realistically allows, no budget fixes the problem and the offer can be declined on the spot.

Remember that the maximum bonus bet is a ceiling, not an instruction. Playing at the ceiling shortens the requirement but raises the size of each loss, which is the trade every bonus quietly asks you to make.

Contribution raises the effective multiplier

Contribution is applied per stake, so a reduced rate multiplies the work. A stake counting at half weighting means two stakes are needed for the progress of one, and the effective multiplier doubles.

Run the sum twice when you intend to play tables or live dealer games. Once at full weighting for pokies, once at the published table rate. The second answer is usually the one that decides the outcome.

Excluded games sit outside the calculation entirely. Stakes there add nothing, and under some policies they breach the bonus terms, which is a worse result than simply wasting the money.

A worked example on the reported figures

The figures reported for the CrownPlay welcome package are disputed, so treat this only as arithmetic practice. A dated secondary review described 35 times wagering on deposit plus bonus; a supplied campaign brief described a two times match with no wagering at all.

Take a deposit of A$100 matched by a bonus of A$100. Those are round numbers chosen for the sum, not published amounts. The base becomes A$200, and 35 times that base gives A$7,000 of required turnover.

Divide A$7,000 by a maximum bonus bet of A$5, again a placeholder rather than a confirmed limit, and the result is 1,400 qualifying rounds. Substitute your own two numbers from the live terms and the method holds.

Compare the answer with a hard budget

The point of the calculation is a decision, not a spreadsheet. Set the loss cap first, independently of any offer, then check whether the round count can be played inside it without raising stakes to catch up.

Offers that fail this test are common and declining them costs nothing. A bonus is only worth accepting when the requirement fits a budget you had already decided on before reading the promotion.

Save the working alongside a dated capture of the terms. If a bonus balance is later adjusted, a short record showing the base, the multiplier and the date is far easier to argue from than memory.

A simple process

  1. 1
Copy the multiplier and the base from the terms, then multiply them into a single dollar figure.

Live details can vary by region, payment method and account status.

  2. 2
Divide that figure by the maximum bonus bet to get an approximate round count.

Pay particular attention to eligibility, expiry, wagering and cashout conditions.

  3. 3
Reject the offer if the round count does not fit your budget and the expiry period together.

Gambling should remain affordable entertainment, never a way to recover money.

Questions Australian players ask

Is turnover the same as the money I need to lose?+

No. It is the sum of stakes placed, and a stake returned as a win can be staked again. Losses depend on the game and the session, not on the requirement.

Should the deposit be included in the calculation?+

Only if the terms name it. A clause reading deposit plus bonus doubles the base compared with one naming the bonus alone. The wording decides, not convention.

How are free spin winnings handled?+

Usually as a separate calculation with their own multiplier. Work them out as a second line rather than folding them into the deposit match figure.

What if the maximum bonus bet makes the figure unreachable?+

Then the offer is unsuitable, and that is a useful result. A requirement needing more rounds than the expiry window allows cannot be completed at any budget.

Do voided or cancelled rounds count towards turnover?+

Check the policy. Some operators exclude rounds cancelled for technical reasons, and some exclude low risk bet patterns entirely. Both can leave a calculation short.
